Where did the idea for the Chaos Wars come from?

Where did the idea of this story come from? Initially, I was inspired by a silly argument between my oldest son and my daughter. No, it had nothing to do with what they were fighting about. It was about the scarcity of the number of TVs they could watch their programs. Hold on; I have a real point. I’m getting to it.

It immediately brought to mind a story I learned when I was Command & General Staff College. A few years ago, Egypt and Nigeria nearly went to war over fresh water. Nigeria was diverting water from the Blue Nile away from Egypt. Essentially, taking the lifeline from Egypt. At the time, I was amazed that war between nations almost happened over drinking water. Since that occurred in 2013, what could happen in the future? How about Rare Earth Elements (REEs)? What amazed me is the uses for REEs. If you are interested, check out this table in Wikipedia. Modern life would stop in its tracks REEs ever ran out.

The Chaos Wars takes place in the future, long after the departure from Earth to far away planets, Scillion and Krystan. The two civilians didn’t conserve the REEs on their new homes, so they ravaged the countryside. In the end, both governments fought a 400-year war over newly discovered planets abundant in what the both so desperately desire. The war ended in a stalemate, declaring that sector of DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) of sorts. This was called the Great War.

The newfound peace gave birth to a new batch of organized crime, pirates, and privateers. It’s been that way for over 1,000 years. Our story begins here when both governments are beyond desperate for their disappearing REEs.
